Last month, Zendaya revealed that the original outfit she had intended to wear to a Bulgari event got lost in transit, but her back-up option didn’t disappoint. With just one hour to find an alternative, her stylist Law Roach sourced an elegant suit by Valentino, complete with a sparkling fishnet tank top that transformed her tailoring into an evening-appropriate look.

Though it was a last-minute solution, Zendaya was (naturally) right on trend with her chosen combination. Party-ready tanks were ubiquitous on the recent runways, where simple silhouettes were realized in beaded lattice, sequins and embellishments, shown alongside 2023’s other hero piece: the plain white tank.

At Emporio Armani’s spring/summer 2023 show held in Milan in September, tops came covered in iridescent paillettes and crystals in purples and blues, while Coperni’s Paris Fashion Week showcase debuted a tank top decorated with sculptural shards.

The autumn/winter 2023 couture presentations made way for even more intricate tanks. Virginie Viard designed scoop-neck embellished tops to go with Chanel’s trademark bouclé tweed tailoring – model Mona Tougaard wore a style decorated with photo-realistic flowers – and Pierpaolo Piccioli tasked his Valentino atelier with making a gossamer-thin beaded tank, slouchy sequin trousers and a puffy jewel-like shawl to comprise look 57.

Now, the trend has reached retailers. Re/Done, Stella McCartney and Bottega Veneta’s crystallised takes on the classic plain white tank pair well with denim – bringing new meaning to the term “jeans and a nice top” – while shimmering tanks from Simone Rocha and 16Arlington are the ultimate party statements.
