2021 had a bunch of big-time releases, several that exceeded expectations, earning over a billion dollars worldwide, and others that were disappointments, barely breaking even. Movie-viewing habits were of course impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent closing of movie theaters and straight-to-streaming releases of several movies.
Fortunately, for many who craved a much-needed distraction from all the chaos in the world, 2021 delivered high-stakes action films, emotional dramas, and so much more. Here are the 21 best Hollywood films from 2021.
21 Godzilla vs Kong
The MonsterVerse movie franchise has a dedicated fanbase, and they showed up in droves to watch this 2021 release. As the title suggests, the film follows two larger-than-life monstrous creatures: King Kong and Godzilla. In Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla attacks a lab in Florida that is creating robots that could contend with Godzilla and be a threat.
Godzilla and other similar monsters known as “Titans” get their power from a source within a place called Hollow Earth. So, the scientists from the lab bring in King Kong to help them locate the source and hopefully put an end to Titans. The MonsterVerse had a few misses in its massive franchise, and while the plot of Godzilla vs. Kong isn’t wholly original, it’s a fun, fast-paced action film with great visual effects.
20 Black Widow
Scarlett Johansson’s last MCU movie was slightly overshadowed by the lawsuit she filed against Disney for releasing the movie simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+. However, for diehard fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Widow is a must-see if not to receive closure than anything else.
