On this occasion, Cher had been snubbed by the Academy for her role in Mask and she was further incensed when she was instead asked to present the award for Best Actress.
“This is revenge dressing at its finest,” Mulhearn says.
“She said to designer Bob Mackie, ‘I want to be impossible to ignore’.”
At one point, Mackie even told Cher what she has in mind was too much and her response was, “No, it’s not enough.”
Despite being snubbed, when Cher stepped on to the red carpet in that outfit she eclipsed every other attendee, going down in history as one of the most iconic Oscars looks.
