It is now almost 14 years since the first episode of the “Game of Thrones” series was broadcast. In a fictional world, various kingdoms fight for supremacy and the so-called Iron Throne. You may be wondering what this has to do with shoe trends. Well, there could also be a battle for the sneaker throne (which is admittedly more of a metaphorical one) in 2025 – but one that is not fought with swords, but with style.
For several years now, the Adidas “Samba” model has been celebrated as the it-sneaker par excellence. Available in different colours, with various patterns or a tongue detail reminiscent of football boots, the trend has been reissued time and time again, sparking a continuous hype around the sneakers. It was only with the introduction of the “Gazelle”, a similarly nostalgic-looking runner sneaker, that the “Samba” seemed to face serious competition, with the new “it” shoe adorning the feet of numerous stars such as Dakota Johnson and Jennifer Lawrence.
In 2025, both models could now be replaced by a new trend sneaker from Adidas: the “Japan” model. According to the sporting goods manufacturer’s website, the design inspiration for this sneaker is “clearly recognisable by the ‘JAPAN’ lettering applied to the side as a gold foil print”. In fact, the silhouette is said to be based on a model from 1964, which was designed for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
The first versions of the new edition of the “Japan” sneaker were launched at the end of 2024, and Adidas is now presenting a design for 2025 that looks even more nostalgic. The retro aesthetic is evident in the choice of colours, but also in the narrow silhouette, which is slightly curved at the front of the toe section. The shoe trend is also made from high-quality leather, which further enhances the elegant, retro appeal.
Because the “Japan” sneaker is both casual and elegant, it can be paired with a wide range of outfits. Additionally, the simple colours of the trend complement various other tones.
