Since stepping down as senior royals, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s joint appearances have been few and far between. While the world does not get as many glimpses into the Duchess of Sussex’s public wardrobe, it’s safe to say that they continue to be just as thoughtful and carefully curated. On a recent visit to Camp Pendleton in San Diego, California, the couple “spent the morning with veteran and active duty service members and their loved ones,” according to their organization Archewell.

For the occasion, Markle opted for a minimalist outfit, which featured a navy blue Carolina Herrera cardigan, and a black pencil skirt by Lafayette 148. The buttoned-up knit was also embroidered with red flowers, which not only makes it an appropriate transitional piece with its hint of spring but also carries a deeper meaning. The poppy flowers are a nod to the UK’s symbol of “remembrance and hope,” which is often also sported by King Charles III, Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Princess Kate. Wednesday’s visit to Camp Pendleton also saw Prince Harry wearing the motif on his jacket.

The public appearance is the first since the couple’s rep shut down rumors about them turning down an invitation to King Charles’s 75th birthday. “In response to UK media headlines, there has been no contact regarding an invitation to His Majesty’s upcoming birthday,” the spokesperson told The Messenger and People. “It is disappointing the Sunday Times has misreported this story.” Additionally, a source who is familiar with the situation also told The Messenger that the Palace had, in fact, “never reached out.”
