Meghan Markle recently offered a rare insight into her “beautiful friendship” with designer Claire Waight Keller, who famously made her wedding gown.
Former Givenchy artistic director Claire Waight Keller’s creation made headlines when Meghan Markle stepped out wearing her wedding gown to marry Prince Harry in 2018. Since then, it’s safe to say that the Duchess of Sussex holds a special place in her heart for the British designer, and having what the royal calls a “beautiful friendship”. In a profile about Waight Keller by The New York Times, the Duchess of Sussex shared a few words about the designer and her new journey as creative director of Uniqlo. “Her pieces for the brand have movement and modern grace,” Meghan wrote in an email to the outlet. The mother-of-two also added that she owns several of the brand’s pieces by the designer, including a trench coat and some dresses.
In November 2023, Waight Keller reflected on the experience of designing Meghan’s wedding gown while speaking at a summit in London. “It was just a pleasure to create in this very, very private way,” she said. “It was just the two of us for so long, and it became this very personal girlfriend relationship.” The designer also told reporters at Kensington Palace in May 2018 that creating the bespoke gown was a “very collaborative” effort. “It was an extraordinary moment,” Waight Keller she added. “It was an incredible thing to be part of, such a historic moment and, in fact, to have the opportunity to work with her.” For her part, Meghan said, “I wanted a female designer, that was very important, I wanted a British designer because I wanted to embrace my new home in that way I wanted [a dress] that felt reflective of the world in a way.”
