Lady Gaga Is Kicking Off Her Joker Tour With Method Dressing

Lady Gaga has always been one to commit. Whether she’s donning avant-garde McQueen gowns, meat dresses, pink cowboy hats, or Old Hollywood feathers, you can always count on Mother Monster to bring fashion drama to the red carpet.

It’s not surprising, then, that she’s continuing her love of statement dressing during her new chapter as a Hollywood leading lady. Last night in London, the superstar attended the premiere of Joker: Folie à Deux, in which she stars as Harley Quinn alongside Jaoquin Phoenix as the Joker. Naturally, she embraced full-on method dressing for the red carpet.

Gaga adds her name to a shortlist of stars who, recently, have channeled their film characters through their fashion choices. (Margot Robbie’s Barbie looks are perhaps the most prominent example of the method dressing movement, and Jenna Ortega took the same approach while promoting Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.) Now, Gaga is doing it for Joker: She wore a fiery red ensemble that nodded to one of Harley Quinn’s signature colors (though, for the new film, Quinn was named called Lee Quinzel).

Gaga’s sculptural bolero jacket and sweeping sweetheart gown was custom-made by Celine, and punctuated with Tiffany & Co. jewels—including a brooch, earrings, and ring. Her bold hair and makeup look, though, really transformed her into character. The blunt, black-and-red wig (applied by Frederic Aspiras) and electric-blue makeup complete with a drawn-on tear (painted by Sarah Tanno) was reminiscent of the slightly clown-like features that both the Joker and Harley are known for in the DC universe.

Flanked by her co-star Phoenix and fiancé Michael Polansky, she looked like a true movie star—but not in the traditional sense. If Gaga’s gonna do one thing, it’s make a glamorous look slightly freaky. We are so back: Put your paws up!
