This weekend, Balenciaga presented its first fashion show in Los Angeles in its 104-year history. The collection was showcased in a posh residential neighborhood, on the street, and was attended by names such as Ashley Graham, Eva Longoria, and Nicole Kidman.
According to the brand, the collection reflects creative director Demna’s perspective of LA’s “fashion codes through a cinematic, character-driven lens”. As such, models on the runway appeared to be making their way to an imaginary cycling or pilates class, with cult grocer Erewhon coffee takeaways in their hands, wearing athleisure and carrying big gym bags, and even yoga mats. Their shoes? As big as they could get. The newly-introduced 10XL Sneaker is a play on the Balenciaga signature of exaggerated proportions, which was also evident in the handbags. The Le Cagole Tote XL, in particular, pays tribute to Balenciaga’s Le City from 2001 in an expanded, and more functional version.
The show was also a play on off-duty celebrity style, with models wearing velvet tracksuits made famous by Paris Hilton and Ugg-style boots with high heels. Another new It accessory? Unexpected, of course: Leather and paper takeaway bags as part of the collaboration with Erewhon. Cardi B was among the models to close the show, as Balenciaga revealed dramatic looks perfect for the coming award season.
Balenciaga’s show served as one more testament to the fact that Los Angeles is quickly establishing itself not only as an entertainment hub, but also as a fashion capital. This year itself, brands such as Dior, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton have hosted mega events in the city, ranging from beauty to fashion.
