Apple Blythe Alison Martin was born in London on May 14, 2004. While the couple was quick to make headlines for the unique name they chose for their daughter, Paltrow later revealed the adorable meaning behind the moniker. “Basically it was because, when we were first pregnant, her daddy said one day, if it’s a girl I think her name should be Apple, and it just sounded so sweet and it conjures such a lovely picture for me, you know apples are so sweet and they’re wholesome and it’s biblical and I just thought it sounded so lovely,” Paltrow told Oprah Winfrey (via People). “And then she was born and it became an international outrage which I found surprising because there are people named Rose or Lily or Ivy or June or lots of pretty nouns.”

In May 2023, Apple’s birthday fell on Mother’s Day, and Paltrow took the opportunity to publicly praise her daughter. “Happy Birthday my angel,” she wrote. “Thank you for sharing your birthday this year with Mother’s Day, a fitting conjugation, a double celebration of you and what you have given to me- the GIFT of being your mom. I love you so deeply and wholly, it defies articulation. To behold you as a 19 year old woman fills my…
