A closer look at Chanel Resort Marseille line, full of summer treasures.

It is said that Marseille only experiences rain ten days of the year. Hélas, sometimes life throws you a curveball. When the Chanel teams invited their guests, among them Marion Cotillard, Tara Emad, and Lyna Khoudri to the South of France port town for its annual resort show, D-day was met with gusty winds and rain, showering on the parade of the Le Corbusier designed La Cité Radieuse, where the first show was featured on the open-air rooftop. Come show two, scheduled for the afternoon, and all had been moved inside. Everything is a matter of perspective, however. For those of us at the second show, we had a fantastic opportunity to view the clothes close up, with models, including Nora Attal and Amina Al Zuhair walking down the hallways mere inches from the guests.

“The sun, architecture, music, and dance: Marseille also has a very strong sense of freedom. I was inspired by the codes of lifestyle, of everyday life, and by all the things that invite movement. The sea and the wind made me want to play with wetsuits,” explains Virginie Viard. She also introduced looks with hoodies, which the show notes indicated would become part of the House’s repertoire. Underwater life was furthered with embroideries that included fish, fishing nets, shells, and shellfish decorating dresses, suit jackets, waistcoats, faille blouses, T-shirts, and little vest tops. The Le Corbusier building also proved to be an inspiration for some designs. Tweeds and sequined jackets reflected the colors, grid motifs, and geometric shapes of the building. Broderie anglaise, waffle fabric skirts, Bermuda shorts, and terry towel flip-flops all answered the summer mood, even if the weather didn’t.
