When Timothée Chalamet arrived at the Oscars dressed in butter yellow, it confirmed what we already knew: it’s the colour of spring 2025. His specific shade was whipped up by Sarah Burton, the recently-appointed creative director for Givenchy, and went onto feature in her debut Fall-Winter 2025 collection for the house: the yellow coat with a nipped-in waist and exaggerated shoulders has been following me around the internet ever since her Paris debut.
Burton isn’t the only one: creamy yellow was spread across the Spring-Summer 2025 collections, with shades ranging from a light Lurpak to a more golden variety. While Mini Egg pastels always resurface every spring, this is less sugary: positioned as an indulgent neutral.
Indeed, Toteme, the leaders of minimalism, presented an entirely monochrome collection, peppered with scarf dresses, blouses and shawls in a pale yellow hue, which is close enough to vanilla to appeal to those who typically shy away from colour. The colour was also present throughout 16Arlington’s Spring-Summer 2025 collection, which arguably offered the coolest stick of butter look of the season: with jeans, jacket, clutch bag and even a bra realised in the same hue.
A lot of people discount yellow as a colour that won’t suit them, but this buttery shade is universally flattering and is as easy to wear as any colour within the beige family. The yellow dress in particular is poised to be a summer blockbuster, as the likes of Chloé, Chanel and Toteme have created wafting midi and maxis that are ideal for sun-drenched plans.
