Red carpet events are back for the last time this year, and Arab designers are determined to see 2023 out on a high note. At the 2023 Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles on Monday night, many stars made an appearance dressed in creations by regional talent.
American rapper and actor Awkwafina opted for couture by Georges Hobeika, as she arrived in an ivory princess gown from the Lebanese designer’s Fall/Winter 2023 collection. Featuring a flared tulle skirt, the gown came with a bodice that was fully embellished in pearl and silver gemstones, which the Crazy Rich Asians star paired with a metallic clutch and matching platforms, courtesy of stylist Erica Cloud.
Chrissy Teigen, who is known to be a fan of Arab designers, went with a sculpted design by Lebanese couture house Tony Ward. The Fall/Winter 2023 number came in a golden-beige ruched fabric, with an elevated neck and a shoulder wraparound detail. Teigen’s stylist Alana Van Deraa paired the look with a mini gold clutch by Judith Lieber, Kallati Jewelry, and metallic Jimmy Choo stilettos.
Danai Gurai walked the red carpet in a pale blue Elie Saab dress with gold detailing. Styled by Wayman and Micah, the Fall/Winter 2022 couture gown featured a figure-hugging silhouette with voluminous, ruffled sleeves. The Black Panther actor wore the dress with geometric gold earrings, and Santoni heels.
Another star to favor Arab designers was Oscar-nominated actor Taraji P. Henson, who channeled her latest film The Color Purple in an off-the-shoulder gown from Zuhair Murad‘s Fall/Winter 2023 ready-to-wear collection.
