In the grand tradition of Jane Birkin herself, Anne Hathaway stepped out with a decorated Hermès bag on her arm. The actor, freshly released from the holds of the SAG-AFTRA strike, wasted no time promoting her forthcoming film Eileen, an adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh’s novel in which she stars alongside Thomasin McKenzie. For her press junket appearance this morning, Hathaway looked chic in a camel Michael Kors Collection coat with an exaggerated shawl collar, a crisp white button-down, black Proenza Schouler over-the-knee boots, and a pair of Krewe aviators.
Dangling from Hathaway’s arm was a black Birkin bag with gold hardware. The status piece completed the Oscar winner’s classic, luxe outfit, but never one to take herself too seriously, Hathaway joined the ranks of Birkin owners who like to spice up the purse with some personalization. She wrapped the top handle in an Hermès 86 twilly silk choker—specifically the brand’s Odyssey scarf. And for a touch of levity, she added a small white leather pegasus charm with burnt orange wings and a tasseled tail. The $1,375 charm is inspired by Thierry Hermès’s beginnings as a harness manufacturer.
Jane Birkin was fond of toting around a beat-up bag, which she decorated with beaded necklaces, a mini harmonica, and an Hermès watch, which she disliked wearing as intended. While Anne Hathaway’s bag isn’t nearly as chaotic as the purse’s namesake’s, her charms add a sweet touch to an otherwise more serious outfit.
