Sandal season has arrived, and if there’s one brand behind the biggest summer footwear trends of the last few years, it’s The Row. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s luxury New York-based label has triggered the resurgence of fisherman sandals, thong styles, and – most recently – made the humble black flip flop the pinnacle of the “quiet luxury” aesthetic.
The overall vibe this year is low-key, with celebrities and fashion editors favouring simple, pared-back designs. After years of very chunky soles, there’s been a notable shift towards more streamlined, slim silhouettes, with little fuss or embellishment. It’s in line with the overarching mood for 2023, which is all about dialled-down logos, muted styling and elevated basics.
