IN THE NEWS Over 600 local news stations have banded together to form advocacy group Coalition for Local News. “Regulators and lawmakers continue to rely on rules that need to be modernized in the streaming era,” says the group on its website. “These rules, and government inaction, put local news providers at an unfair disadvantage in an ecosystem that includes much larger media and tech companies.” Efforts will include working with groups that recognize the importance of local news and encouraging them get involved in modernizing regulations. Forty-five percent of internet viewers reported watching little to no linear TV in a typical day, according to a worldwide study from Ampere Analysis – up 22% in two years. Meanwhile, the number of high linear TV viewers (who watch at least four hours of broadcast TV a day) has slipped from 19% of respondents in 1Q21 to 15% in the first quarter of 2023. But all is not lost. “At first glance, the decline in linear TV viewing looks to be a worrying trend for broadcasters as their traditional audience begins to drift away,” said Minal Modha, Research Director at Ampere Analysis. “However, as the increased engagement with broadcast-led video services shows, if the linear channels can continue to adapt and provide a strong OTT offering for audiences switching from scheduled TV channels, they have an opportunity to retain them, albeit on a different medium.” Marketers spend $408,500 on average to conduct a search and review when an incumbent agency is not involved, according to a new study, The Cost of the Pitch, from the 4A’s, ANA and Advertiser Perceptions.
