Washing your hair with hot water can be damaging to your scalp. “Water that’s too hot strips too much of the natural oils that our body’s skin and scalp require,” says Dr. Barankin. Instead, use warm water and skip the blow-dryer if you can; air drying is better for your scalp. (Just don’t go to sleep with wet hair, as that can actually dehydrate your skin and cause dryness, flakiness and itching). And remember, unless you’re a teenager, you don’t necessarily need to wash your hair every day. Dr. Barankin says less frequent hair washing is acceptable as we get older.
