Kimora Lee Simmons knows the value of confidence. The Smile Train ambassador shared why she donates her time and resources to the cleft-focused organization with ESSENCE at their 25th-anniversary gala at Cipriani. 

Smile Train supports local medical professionals with educational and material resources so that they can provide free cleft surgery and comprehensive cleft care to children globally. They take a holistic approach to care, providing aftercare to patients and supporting them through multiple surgeries in some cases. The event helped raise funds for all of their operations, including 3D-printed cleft stimulation kits. These help surgeons complete clef procedures, potentially limiting the risk of certain complications. Black patients have significantly higher complications, according to theJournal of Plastic Reconstructive Surgery. 

Smile Train announced that they had completed their two millionth free surgery at the event. The news was met with thunderous applause from paddle-raising donors prepared to lighten their pockets for the cause. 

She was presented the Smile Train Goodwill Ambassador award by her daughters , Ming Lee and Aoki Lee. Lee Simmons described seeing a patient blossom and imitating the model’s runway walk after her surgery during her speech. The patient was planning her future after seeing herself in a new light.

There’s a little cushioning in the footbed and a tiny stacked heel so these aren’t totally flat, and the price is pretty fair especially with the sale.

Fit: TTS to a little narrow at the front. I’m usually 5 or 5.5 in most brands and got size 5. The front strap is a little narrow across the toes, but is comfy the few times I’ve worn them already and genuine leather may stretch a bit with wear. I plan to try a 5.5 in Amber to compare! March was a whirlwind! From award shows and after parties and new beginnings such as childbirth, our favorite celebrities were busy and outside, and we loved to see them rejoice in their love.

We loved to see celebs show up for their significant others for their moments, like when Jessica Betts helped escort Niecy Nash-Betts on the stage when she won an Emmy for Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Anthology for her performance in Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. We also loved seeing organic Black love moments on the red carpets, like the NAACP Awards and our very own awards, the 17th Annual Black Women In Hollywood Awards. We spotted lovebirds Idris Elba and his wife Sabrina, Pinky Cole, KJ Smith and Skyh Black, and Danielle Brooks and her husband on both carpets.

Outside of awards season, we witnessed couples embark on new journeys, like giving birth to children, like Bresha Webb and Nick Jones Jr, who recently gave birth to a baby girl, or first date nights as a married couple, like Vedo and his lovely wife, or a marriage proposal, like when Minnesota Vikings baller Patrick Jones II popped the question to his now fiancé Michaela or Jacquees and Deiondra Sanders, are welcoming a baby!

A cursory glance through the headlines of our trade media in the last few weeks suggests that – despite Earth Month’s commitments, launches, and pledges – this sector is far from fixing fashion for good. As my friend and mentor Lucy Siegle says, “There is much pearl-clutching: cotton standards have turned out to be untrustworthy (see: the Better Cotton Initiative and Inditex), brands and retailers are falling short on climate goals, and the collapse of a great new material savior in Renewcell has caused panic and despair.”

Lucy and I have known each other for 16 years – she was there when I started the Green Carpet Challenge in 2010 (in fact, she is the one who challenged me to do it) and I always turn to her when I have existential questions. Knowing that in times of crisis tradition dictates we need something to blame, I pick up the phone to clear my brain: Should we blame the crazy business model predicated on overproduction for over-consumption, should we blame the rampant greenwashing, or should we blame sustainable action? Lucy is used to my crises, and she is good at toning them down. “You’re right, things are not looking that great, and we know the tendency of the fashion sector is to cling on to defunct models. So it is not surprising that in some quarters the response is to proclaim loudly that sustainability should be ditched or watered down.” We both decide that there is no escape from the fact that we have to be morally and pragmatically committed to sorting out the dual crisis of soaring climate emissions and nature loss – so the only possible solution is to “stay with the trouble” of deep sustainability.
