There’s momentary magic in spritzing your favourite perfume, only to watch it disappear within hours. That carefully chosen scent, the one you invested in, fades before it has a chance to linger. Fragrance primers promise to change that, extending the presence of your perfume. But can they truly deliver, or are they just a luxurious manoeuvre with a clever name?
Primers aren’t new. We have had them for face, eyeshadow, and even nails and lashes. Perfume, however, has always been untouchable – the final flourish and evanescent. That’s what makes fragrance primers intriguing: the idea that we can extend something so inherently elusive.
Earlier this summer, Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty launched four Layering Balms alongside her first fragrance, essentially primers for perfume. Soon after, Chanel introduced Coco Mademoiselle Fragrance Primer and Gabrielle Chanel Fragrance Primer. On TikTok’s #FragranceTok, perfume enthusiasts are experimenting with layering, cocktailing scents, and building personal formulas like amateur perfumers. A viral hack has even emerged, with users applying makeup primers to make their perfume last longer. Experts caution, though, that not all makeup primers are created equal, and some can alter the fragrance instead of preserving it.
What exactly is a fragrance primer?
“The idea is straightforward,” says Theodoros Kalotinis, founder of his eponymous label and the nose behind some of the best gourmand fragrances. “A fragrance primer is applied before perfume to prepare the skin and help the scent last longer. It creates a smooth, hydrated base that reduces perfume absorption and evaporation.”
He continues, “A good primer is usually unscented or very lightly fragranced and formulated with ingredients like silicones (dimethicone), glycols (butylene or pentylene glycol), hydrogenated lecithin, and antioxidants.
