Rarely a day goes by without another archive sale being advertised on my Instagram feed. Sure, this is partly to do with the boom in vintage shopping and resale we’ve seen of late, with collectors auctioning off their most treasured pieces and fashion insiders doing a closet detox. But there’s also been a subtle rebrand of the traditional end-of-season sale, too, with brands piggy-backing on the popularity of archival fashion.

“Some designer sales are truly selling archives, while others are selling current seasons,” says Mara Hoffman, who recently held an archive sale – in the truest sense of the term – with Vestiaire Collective, after deciding to close her eponymous brand of 24 years. “It’s important to me that I take responsibility for the inventory that I have, and do everything in my power to keep the things I have made out of landfills.” Bonus: it’s also given customers “the chance to own something that they missed before, or possibly couldn’t afford when it was first offered”.

In some ways, the ubiquity of the archive sale – sometimes branded as a sample sale – is a reflection of the challenging retail landscape right now, particularly for young designers (many of whom were left in debt following the shuttering of Matches earlier this year). But the shift is also a reflection of the changing ways in which we shop: most of us aren’t thinking seasonally anymore, and are instead investing in pieces that will stand the test of time.

Of course, for the likes of Conner Ives, whose signature upcycled styles can be found across all his collections, it makes complete sense to be thinking of his designs in the context of an archive – particularly as he’s literally transforming vintage pieces into highly covetable designs. “We use the term archive sale as a reaction to the breakneck speed that our industry operates at,” the designer explains. “I see the…

Forget party season, awards season is somehow upon us. Following the LACMA Art+Film Gala and the CFDAs, the Governors Awards saw a host of Hollywoodites flock to the red-carpet event in vintage, current season and custom looks. Angelina Jolie swapped trophy archive fashion for an intriguing “no label” find from Kit Vintage, while Lily-Rose Depp and Lupita Nyong’o raided the Chanel vaults for chic reminders of past hit collections from the house. Jennifer Lawrence continued her sleek maternity fashion streak in chocolate Bottega Veneta and Saoirse Ronan wore a custom Louis Vuitton look that she chose, as per her other gowns by Nicolas Ghesquière, to “make [her] feel as strong as [she] could be.”

While in Dubai to celebrate the opening of Chopard’s Dubai Mall boutique, Bella Hadid went for gold in an archival Elie Saab couture dress.

Last night, all eyes were on Dubai Mall where Palestinian-Dutch supermodel Bella Hadid made an appearance at Chopard’s newly reopened boutique. Hadid was all smiles as she cut the ribbon to inaugurate the store in front of an increasingly large crowd of people gathering to catch a glimpse of the 28-year-old. While she stepped out in a black vintage Mugler number at the boutique’s opening, Hadid slipped into archival couture by Elie Saab for the celebration later in the night. The special pieces completing both looks? Glimmering jewelry from Chopard’s Ice Cube collection.

Hadid’s second look for her night out in Dubai paid homage to the region in more than one, subtle way. Picked from the Lebanese designer’s Fall 2004 couture collection, the sequin-covered gown came in a burnt gold hue, and was reminiscent of Dubai’s famed gold souks and the city’s love for dressing everything up in the precious metal. Its light and billowing fabric wasn’t too dissimilar from that of a kaftan, while still aligning with Hadid’s style, as witnessed on her many headline-making Cannes Film Festival red carpet appearances.

The model also invited Vogue Arabia to her hotel room as she got ready for the big night, giving her fans a peek into her beauty routine. Alongside her decision to debut a thick set of bangs, Hadid shared the collective process of choosing her glam with fellow Palestinian makeup artist Nadia Tayeh, and how she uses her Orebella Window2Soul fragrance to bring it all together.

At the celebration, Hadid was joined by Chopard’s artistic director and co-president Caroline Scheufele, beauty mogul Huda Kattan, and many more beloved names from the region.
