Last night, actor Anne Hathaway hosted the 2023 edition of the CFDA Awards in New York. Naturally, the star had to pick an ensemble that left a lasting impression. And Hathaway did not disappoint.
While other guests opted for classic black gowns, Anne walked down the less trodden sartorial path this year with a head-to-toe denim look. Her pick? A dark wash strapless denim corset featuring delicate floral patterns, paired with a trailing acid-wash denim skirt adorning similar flower motifs. The mermaid cut of Hathaway’s skirt is what truly took her outfit from laidback to statement-worthy.

To complete her denim-on-denim look — a Ralph Lauren creation, by the way, first seen at the fashion house’s spring 2024 show — Anne went with a classic pairing: diamond jewelry. The actor accentuated the strapless cut of her corset with a sparkling Bulgari diamond necklace featuring a sapphire pendant, and added final touches via delicate bracelets and rings. As for her beauty look, Anne went with a less-is-more approach with soft waves and barely-there makeup, save for deep black eyeliner.
As interesting as it looks, Anne Hathaway’s outfit isn’t the first time we’ve seen celebrities make a case for formal denim wear. With Britney Spears back in the limelight, many have been drawing parallels between last night’s Ralph Lauren look and the Queen of Pop’s denim dress from the 2001 American Music Awards. You must admit, the resemblance is uncanny.
