After a brief postponement following an unexpected health scare, Madonna returned to the stage on Saturday to kick off her “Celebration Tour” in London. Spanning four decades of her iconic discography, Madonna’s latest concert excursion will take her to 38 cities across Europe and North America.
The tour was initially slated to begin in July, but a severe bacterial infection landed Madonna in the ICU, forcing her first “Celebration” dates to be postponed until October. “If you want to know my secret, and you want to know how I pulled through and how I survive, I thought, ‘I’ve got to be there for my children. I have to survive for them,’” she said.
The Queen of Pop brought her brood on stage during her London debut, celebrating her eldest child Lourdes Leon’s birthday and performing alongside her teenaged daughter Mercy James, who played a rendition of “Bad Girl” on the piano. Madonna also paid tribute to several friends who died of AIDS, singing “In This Life” from her 1992 album, “Erotica.”
Earlier this year, Madonna showcased her costume archives on Instagram, giving fans a close-up look at some of her original Jean Paul Gaultier cone bras. The French couturier has teamed up with Madonna once more for her “Celebration Tour” — but he’s hardly the only designer crafting new custom ensembles for the legendary songstress.
