2023 Was Year of Sheer & See-Through Looks – WWD

The sheer trend isn’t going anywhere: just take it from the red carpet at this year’s Video Music Awards, held at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on Tuesday.

See-through styles were all of the rage at the BET Awards and the Los Angeles premiere of “Barbie” earlier this summer, too. Now, superstars like Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat and Karol G are trying out the trend, taking cues from the runways of LaQuan Smith and Rick Owens, among others.

Megan Thee Stallion opted for a lingerie-inspired column gown by Brandon Blackwood, accessorizing with a diamond choker and cuff bracelet by Jacob & Co. The rapper completed her look with a pair of black open-toe pumps.

Halloween came early for Doja Cat, who sported a custom knit spiderweb dress by Monse. Dressed by her longtime stylist, Brett Alan Nelson, the singer also wore sheer Amina Muaddi pumps and diamond jewelry by Balenciaga, Maria Tash, Yessayan, Yeprem and Nicole Rose.

Karol G also sought Nelson’s styling services to curate her sheer red carpet look. The Colombian songstress donned a blush-toned lace gown and embellished shawl by Ashi Studio. She also added on platform pumps by Amina Muaddi and diamond jewelry by Jacob & Co.
