The ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike means the red carpet at this year’s Venice Film Festival has been an unusually muted affair. Still, the opening days have not been entirely without fashion headlines. For starters, Carla Bruni made an appearance in a not-so-basic black gown by Valentino, and Isabelle Huppert made sure all eyes were on her in a silver fringed number. Elsewhere, Amal Clooney treated the world to another glimpse of her impressive collection of archive fashion, floating into the 14th annual DVF Awards dressed in a blush slip dress from John Galliano’s autumn/winter 2000 Dior collection. Let’s just say no one was looking at Amal’s plus one – even though Amal’s plus one is George Clooney.

Sydney Sweeney
Rivalling Venice at golden hour for its glow in Armani Privé.
Patrick Dempsey
Ferrari got a six-minute standing ovation at the festival, at least some of which must be down to the return of Patrick Dempsey (or, to give him his proper name, McDreamy), wearing Brunello Cucinelli.
Amal Clooney
Another vintage highlight from Amal’s wardrobe – this time Galliano’s Dior.
Milena Smit
The Spanish actor embraced the drama of her Saint Laurent dress on the red carpet.
Alice Diop
The French filmmaker chose a Chloé dress in autumn’s standout shade, perfectly complemented by a red lip.
Isabelle Huppert
Huppert can always be relied on to deliver a look on the Euro festival circuit. In Venice, she swept onto the red carpet in metallic Balenciaga fringing.
Carla Bruni
Queen of the mid-life bombshells, Carla’s sinuous olive Saint Laurent dress is just the thing to show off her late summer tan.
