Bikinis are outselling one-piece swimming costumes seven to one as more middle-aged women decide ‘age is no barrier’ and dare to bare.
Two-piece beachwear has accounted for four-fifths of swimwear sales this year, while traditional one-piece bathing costumes account for just 12 per cent of customer purchases, figures from online department store Freemans.com show.
Fashion experts say older women no longer feel the need to cover up and are embracing their bodies regardless of age.
Linda Quinn, Freemans.com merchandising chief, said: ‘Traditionally women felt pressure to ditch the bikini as they got a little bit older.
‘Now women of all ages and shapes are embracing the freedom a two-piece costume brings.

‘They’re loud and proud and keen to don the brightest prints to look good by the pool, the beach and in photos they post online.
‘The so called fashion rule book is being torn up or ignored. If what you wear makes you feel great – go for it. Age is no barrier.’
The figures also show sales of cover-up kaftans have dropped to under one per cent of all beachwear.
