Dubai Fashion Week Day 6: A Sensational Finale From Manish Malhotra

“With this collection, we wanted to refine the concept of maximalism, not as excess, but as an intentional expression of craftsmanship and cultural dialogue,” Malhotra tells Vogue Arabia. “Each piece is a testament to the coming together of Indian craftsmanship with contemporary silhouettes, creating a global sensibility that speaks to the modern connoisseur.”

Some designs were clearly sari-inspired – such as a mermaid-esque gown encompassing a long train and head-covering, and covered completely in sequins, while others showed Malhotra’s own take on culturally-rooted kaftans. He dressed some models in gowns with corsets; others in high necklines and headscarves. Menswear was also a focus, through a range of statement blazers – embroidered, beaded and garnished with brooches.

Since the 90s, Malhotra has been designing the on-screen costumes for Bollywood stars, as well outfits for A-list Indian weddings. He won seven awards just for the wardrobes he created for the iconic 1998 film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and has dressed brides from Preity Zinta to Karisma Kapoor, as well as international names like Kylie Minogue and Kate Moss. In 2023, along with launching high jewellery, he opened his first flagship boutique outside of India, in Dubai Mall’s Fashion Avenue. In 2024, he became the first Indian designer to showcase at Harrods in London, transporting dresses steeped in South Asian heritage and handicraft to the centre of Knightsbridge.
