When the weather drops, layering is definitely your friend. It’s all about jumpers and cardigans you can take on and off when needed – or, in the case of fashion’s favorite It-girls, have casually slung over your shoulders (a styling trick that’s easy to recreate at home).

While wool and cashmere come with a host of ethical and environmental concerns, there are a number of brands working to ensure that our sweaters are produced in a responsible way, from Gabriela Hearst (a go-to for the Princess of Wales) to &Daughter (as seen on Alexa Chung).

Below, see five sustainable knitwear brands to invest in now, according to the A-list.

&Daughter

British brand &Daughter works with spinners in the UK and in Ireland to produce its 100 per cent natural knitwear offering, which is focused on classic designs that are made to last. To celebrate its 10th anniversary this year, the brand – which counts the likes of Alexa Chung and Leandra Medine among its fans – is reissuing 10 of its best loved “forever” pieces, including its Ada cardigan and Innes slouch knit

Totême

Scandi label Totême has quickly become a fashion-editor favourite, with its striped roll-neck jumper owned by several staffers in Vogue House. A-listers including Kendall Jenner, Sophie Turner and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley have also been spotted in the brand’s knitwear, which is made of organic and recycled wool, certified by the Responsible Wool Standard.

Known for her commitment to sustainability, it’s no surprise that Gabriela Hearst’s knitwear – seen on the likes of the Princess of Wales – is made with responsibility in mind. In fact, the designer now sources wool from her family’s ranch in Uruguay, meaning it is, of course, 100 per cent traceable.
