This year, stealth wealth emerged as one of the biggest—and most polarizing—trends. Designers put forward clothes that were quietly luxurious, and many fashion fans loved the idea of rocking natural tones and discreet silhouettes (it’s no wonder Phoebe Philo’s eponymous debut sold out in a matter of minutes). Others prefer their designer duds to be more kooky and whimsical. They wonder, is stealth-wealth code for boring? Celebrities certainly didn’t think so, and stars like Jennifer Lawrence and Zoe Kravitz got on board with the look. But few nailed the art of stealth wealth as well as Angelina Jolie.

Whether in the summer or the fall, Jolie has consistently stepped out in looks this year that whisper elegance. As a longtime wearer of all-black, Jolie is not new to the trend, but her quietly-polished wardrobe of neutrals felt especially in tune with the moment. What the star’s chic ensembles lacked in bold colors or over-the-top finishes, they made up for in interesting fabrics, cuts, and killer accessories—like the giant Saint Laurent quilted tote she’s been carrying nonstop, for one.

Some of Jolie’s best looks of the year? They were all found off-duty. In August, she emerged in New York City wearing a white slip dress with an off-white blazer and nude pumps. Super sharp. In September, she showed up to the JFK airport in a double-breasted coat, dress trousers, and stilettos—making case for rocking black tie while catching a flight. All of these ensembles are reserved, sure, but when you look a little closer, they read expensive; The proportions and fabrications are just right.

It’s an art to make a monochromatic neutral look pop, but Jolie has done it again and again. My personal favorite was the black suit she wore in New York this summer, paired with a black camisole top and pointed pumps—a saucier take on business attire.
